Volkswagen introduces the next-generation of driver safety technology

What is Volkswagen IQ.DRIVE?

Driving a car safely requires total focus and the ability to constantly be aware of what is happening around the vehicle at all times. Suffice it to say that this can be both mentally taxing and physically exhausting. As the industry steadily marches toward autonomous vehicles, Volkswagen has introduced a new suite of systems to take some of the burdens from drivers. So, what is Volkswagen IQ.DRIVE? Human drivers are prone to fatigue, especially on long drives. The IQ.DRIVE system acts as another set of eyes that will help drivers avoid potentially dangerous situations. Let’s take a look at a couple of key elements of IQ.DRIVE and how it can help you in some very common driving scenarios.

How does VW IQ.DRIVE work?

People driving on long stretches of straight highway may zone out. This is a well-documented phenomenon. The new Travel Assist portion of the IQ.DRIVE suite is a semi-autonomous driving feature that will not only make sure your VW vehicle is centered in its lane of travel, but it will also keep a preset distance from traffic ahead of you. It is important to note that Travel Assist will only work if a driver has both of their hands on the steering wheel.

One of the biggest challenges drivers face is trying to anticipate the actions of other drivers. If a vehicle in front of you starts to slow down and you don’t react in time, the IQ.DRIVE system will increase braking power to help you stop sooner. Under the right conditions, the vehicle can even apply the brakes automatically.

Experiencing a medical emergency while driving is a terrifying thought. A person can become incapacitated while behind the wheel for any number of reasons. IQ.DRIVE will also monitor the driver as well as the area around the vehicle. If a driver’s hands were to come off the steering wheel, a series of visual and aural alerts will be initiated. Should a drive not respond to those alerts, the IQ.DRIVE will take over and bring the vehicle to a controlled stop.
