What are the benefits of push-button start in your VW?
What is VW Keyless Access with Push-Button Start?
Some of us older drivers always get a bit misty-eyed when we think about the simpler days, and that includes long discussions of the virtues of older cars. They were easier to fix, after all, and why can’t it be as intuitive to use a touchscreen as it was to simply turn a knob or push a button? Of course, we tend to gloss over the fact that seats weren’t as supportive, everything vibrated and both A/C and cruise control were considered luxuries. Today’s luxuries include more complex features, like the VW keyless access with push-button start system. What is it, and what are its benefits?
How does Volkswagen keyless access work?
The KESSY keyless access with push-button start is just what it sounds like: you can enter your VW without using the keys and then push a button to start it. You have to have your key fob on you, of course, so the system recognizes you and doesn’t just start for anyone, but it’s a convenient feature. One thing we never remember fondly is fumbling for our keys on cold winter days or trying to push them into frozen key holes.
Many models now have the keyless access system, including select trims of the 2017 Volkswagen Jetta. Considering this option is still considered premium for many brands, its availability for higher trims of the base model shows the VW goal of democratizing convenience features.
So let’s get to it, how do you use push-button start? Basically there is a transmitter in your key fob and a starter module hidden in the dash. When you are within five feet of the vehicle, you can open the door by placing your palm flat behind the handle.
To lock the door, you simply place your thumb on the dimple in the handle. Push-button start is just as it sounds, but you must press the brake before pushing the button for obvious reasons. Just remember, push-button start says “start/stop” on it for a reason. Just as you have to press the button to start your vehicle, remember to press it when you are done driving too.
Do you think the keyless access with push-button start is a convenient feature, or do you prefer the simplicity of a physical key? Share your thoughts with a comment below, and be sure to check back here at the Compass Volkswagen Blog for more posts on all things VW.
