Rumor on the street was that the 2017 Volkswagen Tiguan in Middletown NY would have a redesign, but it looks like that is being pushed forward for another model year. Still, the sporty and fun SUV does come to Compass Volkswagen with two new trim levels to bring even more value to this already feature-packed crossover. Unfortunately, the R-Line and SE trims are getting nixed, but this is to make room for options that will have more luxury for the price, including an available leather package upgrade.
The 2017 Volkswagen Tiguan is a crossover that aims to bring back the experience that once made the segment so desirable. Many enjoy them for the practical elements of more cargo space without losing out on maneuverability, but to keep costs low other automakers tend to strip features and provide underpowered engines. VW is the brand to turn to for those who are looking for an option that truly brings the rugged and outdoor-ready experience to the fray, while also offering great features.
The Tiguan is available as a front- or all-wheel drive model and is paired with a standard 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that delivers up 200 horsepower and 207 pound-feet of torque. The standard transmission is a six-speed automatic with Tiptronic, Sport mode and Dynamic Shift Program.
Interior space is arguably one of the main reasons to upgrade to a crossover compared to a midsize sedan, more particularly when it comes to cargo. The Tiguan has 95.4 cubic feet of passenger space and an additional 23.8 cubic feet of cargo space, which expands up to 56.1 cubic feet with seats folded.
A major update for 2017 is the standard 6.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system that includes VW Car-Net App-Connect, bringing Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration to the unit. Other features include Bluetooth, a rearview camera, heated front seats, and keyless access with push-button start.
New 2017 Volkswagen Tiguan Trim Levels
As we’ve said, the major news for the 2017 Volkswagen Tiguan is the removal of the sporty R-Line and the mid-level SE to replace them with the Wolfsburg and Sport trims. As discussed, the base S trim has been upgraded to include a standard 6.3-inch touchscreen system. The Wolfsburg comes in above the S trim and includes special badging and floormats and a standard panoramic sunroof. The Sport is one trim above this, sitting in the middle, and offers 18-inch gray Mallory aluminum-alloy wheels, body-matched side sills and rear bumper, black side-mirrors caps, sport suspension and dual-zone automatic climate control.
To add value and comfort, a leather upholstery package will also be available for the Sport trim, which not only includes genuine Vienna leather seating surfaces, but also power driver and passenger seats, driver’s side memory and power-folding door mirrors.
The 2017 Volkswagen Tiguan will have the same powertrain and comes in FWD or AWD options. Other standard features include keyless access with push-button start, a rearview camera and heated front seats, while available features found in higher trims include dual-zone climate control, Fender Premium Audio, Bi-Xenon headlights and touchscreen navigation.
